While universities have the potential to play a significant role in advancing gender equality, diversity, and inclusivity, both within higher education and throughout society, they still frequently exhibit gender biases and are predominantly male-dominated, with noticeable disparities often seen at regional and national scales (as indicated by the European Commission in 2021 and UNESCO in 2022). Faculty members often encounter instances of microaggression, discrimination, quid pro quo arrangements, and gender-based harassment from their fellow colleagues or individuals in high-ranking positions. In higher education, both students and staff frequently experience unequal treatment and discrimination based on their sexual orientation.
The combination of the factors mentioned above, coupled with a recognition of the significant gender-related challenges in academic institutions, serve as the driving force behind G-FORCE‘s partners’ initiative to establish a network of universities or a European alliance. This network is committed to promoting gender balance and advocating for respect of sexual orientation by raising awareness about equality and offering innovative digital resources and tools.
