Background and description
The Mediterranean has been a place marked by unique historical phenomena and events. The rich historical heritage has been also combined with seamless communication among peoples, languages, traditions while at the same time ancient port cities -live so far- are all culture modern lighthouses and quality tourism destinations.
This conference entitled “Historical ports in the Mediterranean: culture and quality tourism contemporary lighthouses” aims to highlight these ancient port-cities of the Mediterranean (e.g., Chania, Lisbon, Marseilles, Syracuse, Larnaca, Smyrna, Tarragona, etc.), which gave their own mark on the Mediterranean coastal heritage and European history. The conference spatial-temporal dimension concerns four periods, from antiquity to modern times; it includes the simultaneous recording and highlighting of all parameters-institutions that make up the character of each ancient port-modern city and are actively involved in the development of, for example, tourism, agriculture and winemaking sector, trade, culture, etc., with any subsequent proliferative economic, social and cultural strength of this engagement.
Originality and contribution
The conference seeks to combine the approaches of the social sciences and humanities, history and culture with those of the Information and New Technologies sciences, while strengthening the contribution of business, tourism, social organizations into preservation and promotion of the ancient ports-modern Mediterranean cities and its historical character. The relations among these cities, their cultural routes, the partnerships growing at a local and international level as well as the listing and implementation of joint national and European programs are central themes and perspectives emerging from the conference.
In the whole venture, the conference conduct entails a particular value because of being held in Chania and under the auspices of the Municipality, taking into account the leading role of the city in the Mediterranean and Europe, its cultural contribution and economic-touristic spot in the Mediterranean area and on the world map. The main body of the conference and the parallel activities to be developed (interdisciplinary interest roundtables, tours, visits to museums and historical sites, cultural events, etc.) together with the participation of scientists, researchers, experts, entrepreneurs, social representatives, delegates from public and private institutions in Greece and abroad (primarily from the Mediterranean area, but also from the wider European region and worldwide) trigger the further exploitation of Chania in multiple areas as well as direct benefits addressing the city during the conference activities.
